Song of the Tower Warden
By
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Born 1749 Frankfurt/Main, died 1832 Weimar
Translation: Zum Sehen Geboren
Born to see,
Assigned to view,
Sworn to the tower
The world my delight.
I look to the distance,
I see what is near,
The moon and the stars,
The wood and the deer.
So I see in them all
The permanent grace,
And as they please me
I’m pleased with myself.
You fortunate eyes,
Whate’er you have seen,
It be as it may
So fair it has been.
