Abundance
By Conrad Ferdinand Meyer
Born 1825 Zurich, died 1898 Zurich

Translation: Fuelle

Enough is not enough! Praise be
To Autumn! No branch that lacks its fruit!
Some bending low beneath their burden,
The apple dropping with a sound.

Enough is not enough! Cheer is in the trees!
The juicy peach invites the thirsty eater.
The drunken wasps are humming in a chorus
"Enough is not enough!" around a grape.

Enough is not enough! In fullest draughts
The poet’s mind drinks from the fountainhead of plenty.
The heart as well, it needs abundance,
Enough can never ever be enough!
